Methodology

Seven signals. One honest score.

Every campground on CampingPoints gets a 0–100 score built from the categories that actually shape a trip. No stars from strangers, no vanity metrics.

Last reviewed: January 2026

Data note. Scores are editorial estimates from published park data, amenity lists and seasonal booking patterns — not live availability. Booking availability shown on partner sites is authoritative.

View Points

20% weight

Scenery, lake, mountain, forest and sunset quality.

Comfort Points

15% weight

Showers, toilets, electricity, water, laundry and store.

Family Points

10% weight

Safe layout, easy access, activities and playgrounds.

Remote Points

10% weight

Privacy, quiet, low crowding and real nature feel.

RV Points

15% weight

Hookups, dump station, RV size access, pull-throughs.

Value Points

15% weight

Price relative to amenities and location quality.

Booking Points

15% weight

How easy the site is to secure — a lower score means the campground is harder to book during popular dates.

Worked example

Watchman Campground in Zion. Strong views and value carry the overall score; booking difficulty pulls it down.

What we do

  • Compare campgrounds like-for-like across seven signals.
  • Update seasonally as amenities and booking patterns change.
  • Show the score breakdown on every listing — no hidden weighting.
  • Explain why each site scored the way it did in plain English.

What we don't do

  • Sell placement. Score is not affected by booking partners.
  • Claim live availability. That's what alerts are for.
  • Aggregate anonymous star ratings. Scores are model-based.
  • Treat every trip the same. Sort by what matters for yours.
A note on accuracy. Scores are estimates from a mix of park data, published amenity lists and seasonal booking patterns. They change over time and should complement, not replace, your own research. If you spot something off, let us know from any listing.
